Idempotents in complex group rings: theorems of Zalesskii and Bass revisited

چکیده
Let Γ be a group, and let CΓ be the group ring of Γ over C . We first give a simplified and self-contained proof of Zalesskii’s theorem [23] that the canonical trace on CΓ takes rational values on idempotents. Next, we contribute to the conjecture of idempotents by proving the following result: for a group Γ , denote by PΓ the set of primes p such that Γ embeds in a finite extension of a pro-p-group; if Γ is torsion-free and PΓ is infinite, then the only idempotents in CΓ are 0 and 1. This implies Bass’ theorem [2] asserting that the conjecture of idempotents holds for torsion-free subgroups of GLn(C) .

Rings in which elements are the sum of an idempotent and a regular element
Let R be an associative ring with unity. An element a in R is said to be r-clean if a = e+r, where e is an idempotent and r is a regular (von Neumann) element in R. If every element of R is r-clean, then R is called an r-clean ring. In this paper, we prove that the concepts of clean ring and r-clean ring are equivalent for abelian rings. Further we prove that if 0 and 1 are the only idempotents...
متن کاملPrimitive central idempotents of finite group rings of symmetric groups
Let p be a prime. We denote by Sn the symmetric group of degree n, by An the alternating group of degree n and by Fp the field with p elements. An important concept of modular representation theory of a finite group G is the notion of a block. The blocks are in one-to-one correspondence with block idempotents, which are the primitive central idempotents of the group ring FqG, where q is a prime...

Let $R$ be a $*$-prime ring with center $Z(R)$, $d$ a non-zero $(sigma,tau)$-derivation of $R$ with associated automorphisms $sigma$ and $tau$ of $R$, such that $sigma$, $tau$ and $d$ commute with $'*'$. Suppose that $U$ is an ideal of $R$ such that $U^*=U$, and $C_{sigma,tau}={cin R~|~csigma(x)=tau(x)c~mbox{for~all}~xin R}.$ In the present paper, it is shown that if charac...
متن کاملWedderburn decomposition of finite group algebras
We show a method to effectively compute the Wedderburn decomposition and the primitive central idempotents of a semisimple finite group algebra of an abelian-by-supersolvable group G from certain pairs of subgroups of G. In this paper F = Fq denotes a finite field with q elements and G is a finite group of order n such that FG is semisimple, or equivalently (q, n) = 1. The group algebra FG is a...
